Nigerian singer Ayra Starr emerged as the joint top winner at the 2025 MOBO Awards, held Tuesday night at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena.
The Mavin star took home two major awards—Best African Music Act and Best International Act.

She clinched the Best International Act title despite tough competition from global stars like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, Tems, Asake, and Tyla.
Ayra Starr also triumphed over Asake, Rema, Tems, Burna Boy, and Tyla to win the Best African Music Act award, making history as the first female winner of the category in 16 years.
Reacting to the news on social media, Ayra Starr said: “My king !!! Jesus! Thank you!!!!! 😭 😭.”
British rapper Central Cee made history as the joint most-decorated rapper in MOBOs history, winning Best Male Act for a record-breaking third consecutive year.
Meanwhile, British-Nigerian singer Darkoo claimed the Best Female Act award, beating RAYE, Jorja Smith, Little Simz, Cleo Sol, and Nia Archives.
The three-man podcast 90sBabyShow won the Best Media Personality award, while Nigerian-born singer Odeal took home the Best Newcomer award.
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr rose to fame after her 2021 hit Bloody Samaritanwent viral.
Signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, she has become a prominent figure in the industry, earning numerous awards and nominations for her talent.
